writes "SANTA FE – The application deadline is midnight July 7 for a chance to watch
and participate in a Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep trapping operation – an outstanding
recreational opportunity offered by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish.
The Aug. 10-15 bighorn sheep trapping operation at Wheeler Peak near Taos is
among several opportunities offered through the Gaining Access Into Nature (GAIN)
program. GAIN offers people a chance to experience wildlife-associated recreation
other than hunting and fishing. Activities also include guided elk bugling,
deer viewing and bird-watching tours, and electrofishing surveys.
To apply for the bighorn sheep GAIN activity, please visit the Department Web
site, www.wildlife.state.nm.us
and click on “Wildlife Adventures.” The activity fee is $81 per person and two
spots are available. Successful applicants will be notified in mid-July.
A GAIN event scheduled July 28-30 has been cancelled. Plans for the Desert
Creature Double-Feature included guided nighttime tours to view a myriad of
snakes, lizards and other creatures of the night near Deming, and a special
stargazing activity at City of Rocks State Park. The event may be rescheduled.
